About Benton, KY - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
The city of Benton belongs to Marshall County, in the state of Kentucky. It serves as the county seat and looks after all its administrative issues and affairs. Incorporated in 1845, the city was named for Thomas Hart Benton who was a senator from Missouri. The city has a population of 4,349 and lies on a total area of 4.32 square miles of which 0.05 square miles is water.
The city of Benton is home to the best of traditions and events of the country. The Big Singing Day in Benton is held every year on the fourth Sunday of May. The tradition has continued ever since it began in 1884 by James R. Lemon and his family, which makes it the oldest musical celebration in the US. On this day, singers gather in the city to sing from the Southern Harmony, which is a tune book compiled by William Walker. The event features various performances of revival songs and hymns.
Tater Day is another traditional event that you and your taste buds are sure to love. The old festival tradition started back in 1842 when local sweet potato seedlings were distributed among the residents of Benton. This was done as a means to enhance prospects of local agriculture. However, the current event is celebrated a little differently as it’s marked by a spectacular carnival and delicious fried food. Other highlights of it are the demolition derby and the set up of a flea market.
The city’s distinct features include the warm climate that is typical of the southern region. However, with 51 inches of rainfall every year, the city gets plenty of rainy days that even out the sunny ones. No need to worry about shoveling snow from your yard or your roof sinking in because Benton only gets 7 inches of snow every year.
